JULIE DORVAL

MOVMENT DIRECTOR - CHOREOGRAPHER
"I craft movement that turns the body into a cinematic statement"

Drawn to movement from a young age, she quickly stood out for her versatility and innate sense of composition. Over the years, she has explored and mastered a range of styles - from contemporary dance and street jazz to voguing - weaving them into a language that is uniquely her own.

Deeply influenced by fashion and yoga, Julie enriches her choreographic approach with textures drawn from stillness, tension, and fluidity. She embraces contrasts — softness and strength, shadow and light, power and vulnerability — always searching for the delicate interplay between visual form and emotional resonance.

With extensive experience across stage and screen, she has assisted renowned American choreographers such as Nina McNeely and Sonya Tayeh on large-scale productions, from music videos and TV performances to film. Her professionalism and adaptability have earned her the trust of demanding artists while allowing her to cultivate her own choreographic identity.

She believes in movement as a universal language, accessible to all. She enjoys working with diverse bodies, guiding them through a process grounded in trust, emotion, and presence. Her work seeks an authentic sensory connection, using space as an extension of the body to craft immersive visual and emotional experiences.

In parallel, she collaborates with filmmakers on short and experimental works, always attentive to the unique needs of each production. Her sensitivity to both artistic intention and technical constraints allows her to enhance every project with precision and creativity.

Julie has also directed staging and movement coaching for artists such as Owlle, Olivia Merilahti (The Dø), Sabrina Bellaouel, and Jeanne Added, as well as choreographed performances for Travis Scott, Disclosure, Florence + The Machine, and Kiddy Smile. Her collaboration with director Gaspar Noé profoundly shaped her artistic vision, inspiring a choreographic approach in which every movement is conceived in dialogue with the camera — as much about sensation as it is about form.

"She celebrates the collective force of creation, where individual talents merge to shape a vision greater than the sum of its parts."
Approaching space as a living entity — a co-creator of movement. Each environment, whether theatrical, cinematic, or raw, shapes the composition and rhythm of the work. This dialogue between body and space builds a visual dramaturgy where perception and sensation merge into a single experience.

Exploring movement as a living material, each gesture emerges from emotion and spatial awareness. Between fluidity and tension, softness and strength, the choreography seeks that fragile balance where form becomes language — and motion turns into meaning.

MOVEMENT DIRECTOR: JULIE DORVAL
On this music video, I led the movement direction, immersing the performers in a realistic and raw clubbing atmosphere that echoed both the sonic intensity of the track and the director's hypnotic visual world.
My role was ot create a coherent and organic symbiosis between the performers' physicality and the overall rhythm of the scene, guiding them to find the right balance netween authentic moments of lite and embodied dance expression.
I worked to shape an energy that felt visceral and alive on screen, encouraging the dancers to move fluidly between graphical real-life moments and the expression of their individual movement guality.

This balance allowed the scene to remain anchored in physical truth while showcasing each performer's artistic uniqueness, in harmony with Noé's radical and immersive visual language.
I directed the movement for the music video, immersing performers in a raw clubbing atmosphere that matched the track’s intensity and the director’s hypnotic visuals. My aim was to align their physicality with the rhythm of the scene, balancing authentic lived moments with embodied dance expression.
I encouraged dancers to shift fluidly between real gestures and their unique movement qualities, creating visceral on-screen energy while staying true to Noé’s immersive visual language.

Aurora 12 - Lure of the sea

MOVEMENT DIRECTOR: JULIE DORVAL
For this editorial shoot for Numero, I directed the models to embody marine-like creatures, moving with a sense of suspended fluidity and silent strength.
The intention was to evoke the feeling of being dazzled and elevated by sunlight piercing through the ocean to reach the depths-both emotionally and physically.
I aimed to bring out a haunting, graceful presence, rooted in the textures of underwater movement, while embracing a dreamlike, cinematic atmosphere.

The goal was to evoke a haunting yet graceful presence, shaped by underwater textures and motion, while creating a dreamy, cinematic atmosphere.

The video was filmed using an immersive four-camera setup, capturing the performance from multiple angles in real time.
I directed three distinct live performances: one featuring the singer solo, one with four people, and a final version with a live audience - all composed of non-professional extras.

The main challenge was guiding everyone toward physical accuracy and authentic presence, helping them embody the right attitude without overacting, despite the pressure of filming.
As highlighted in a feature by Tétu magazine, Ades the Planet - a rising and promising voice on the alternative rap scene - elevates their track "24 Carats" with a sleek, visually polished music video. The piece was filmed using a multi-camera setup, creating an immersive effect that enhances the already enveloping nature of the song.

Both Sides

CHOREOGRAPHER: JULIE DORVAL
Jeanne Added is a unique French artist at the crossroads of electro-pop, rock, and jazz. With a powerful and profound voice, she explores musical realms where raw intensity and introspective delicacy intertwine.
I worked on the full creation of the BOTH SIDES project, developing both a live concert version and a filmed version for Arte, shot in Luc Besson's studios. Over the course of a month and a half, I coached Jeanne in developing her own choreographic language - a movement rooted in her identity, allowing her to sing and perform with the same freedom and intensity as on stage.
This immersive performance engaged all the senses and followed a gradually decreasing are - from fullness to stillness - ending a cappella, standing on a one-meter-by-one-meter cube: a raw, minimal and striking final image.

Tajabone - Just Dance

ASSISTANT director: JULIE DORVAL
I contributed to the development of a choreographic camera language, approaching framing and movement as a form of dance, and also collaborated on the editing structure to extend this visual writing.
Tajabone is a short film about the French Black queer community, celebrating their pride, achievements, and self-acceptance.
Wearing leopard-print leotards that reflect their intense dance styles, the protagonists of Tajabone use their bodies to explore the fragility, strength, and conviction at the heart of a community bound by radical self-expression.
Musician and writer Mykki Blanco wrote a poem heard in the stirring voiceover in Tajabone. This text explores the vulnerability and strength of the Black queer community, as well as the ongoing traumas they face. Blanco's powerful words resonate throughout the film like a trance; they carry uplift, inspiration, and uncompromising determination.
